Egg Freezing
Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a proactive fertility preservation option for women who may want to have children later in life. This procedure allows eggs to be retrieved, frozen, and stored for future use, offering flexibility and peace of mind when planning for parenthood.
Quality and Quantity of Eggs with Aging
Unlike men, women experience a natural decline in fertility over time. This is due to reproductive aging, which affects both the quantity and quality of eggs (ovarian reserve).
At birth, a baby girl has 1-2 million eggs. This number steadily declines throughout life and is nearly depleted by menopause. By the late 30s, egg count decreases significantly, and by the early 40s, the decline becomes even more pronounced.
In addition to quantity, egg quality also diminishes with age. As women reach their late 30s, the proportion of abnormal eggs—those that may not result in a viable pregnancy—begins to rise. This leads to increased difficulty in conceiving naturally and a higher risk of miscarriage due to chromosomal abnormalities.
Oocyte Vitrification
To help preserve fertility, oocyte vitrification is used to freeze a woman’s eggs at their healthiest stage. Vitrification is an advanced “flash freezing” technique that rapidly cools eggs from 98°F to-320°F in less than a second, preventing the formation of ice crystals that could damage cells. Thanks to this method, approximately 95% of vitrified eggs survive the thawing process, making this an effective fertility preservation option.

Who Should Consider Egg Freezing?
Egg freezing is an excellent option for:
- Women who are not yet ready to have children but want to preserve their fertility.
- Patients undergoing medical treatments (such as chemotherapy) that could impact ovarian function.
- Those with a family history of early menopause.
- Individuals or couples exploring LGBTQ+ family planning options.
How Does Egg Freezing Work?
Ovarian Stimulation – Fertility medications are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.
Egg Retrieval – A minor procedure is performed to retrieve the eggs from the ovaries.
Vitrification (Freezing) – The eggs are flash-frozen using advanced cryopreservation techniques to maintain their quality.
Storage for Future Use – The frozen eggs are stored until the patient is ready to use them for fertilization through IVF.
