Ovulation Induction

Stimulating Egg Growth for Conception

Ovulation induction involves taking oral or injectable medications to stimulate egg growth. Ultrasounds, with or without bloodwork, are used to monitor egg development. When the eggs are close to maturity, ovulation is triggered, followed by either timed intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI) to increase the chances of pregnancy.

This treatment may be recommended for:
  • Individuals with unexplained infertility
  • Women with irregular ovulation or anovulation (such as those with PCOS)
  • Couples experiencing mild male factor infertility
  • Those using donor sperm, including single women and LGBTQ+ couples
  • Women with endometriosis
  • Cases where frozen sperm is used due to the male partner being unavailable

During IUI, sperm from either a partner or a donor is washed and concentrated before being placed directly into the uterus, allowing the sperm to swim through the fallopian tubes and fertilize an egg. At least one healthy fallopian tube is necessary for success.

For some patients with a low antral follicle count (AFC), a modified approach called Mini Stim IVF (minimal stimulation IVF) may be recommended. This involves a combination of oral and low-dose injectable medications to optimize ovarian response while keeping costs lower than traditional IVF. Since Mini Stim IVF often requires multiple cycles, South Coast Fertility Specialists offer three-cycle package options to help manage expenses.
